41% of Mid-Sized Firms Running AI in Production — But ROI Gap Remains the Core Problem

Survey data compiled by Arkis AI as of August 14 puts production AI deployment at mid-sized firms (20–300 lawyers) at 41%, up from 28% a year ago — the fastest annual gain in adoption rate the segment has recorded. The gains are concentrated in seven workflow categories: client intake automation, contract review, M&A due diligence, legal research, document drafting, deposition preparation, and billing optimization. Practitioners report that AI client intake agents wired into Clio, MyCase, or Litify can recover 15–22 paralegal hours per week per 50 active matters, while AI contract review integration into DMS platforms recovers 8–14 associate hours per M&A deal. The caveat embedded in the data is the word "production": 86% of mid-sized firms now use AI in some capacity, but the gap between licensed access and measurable workflow integration remains large, and firms that have not progressed past experimentation face a compounding lag as production-deployed competitors extend their lead.
