The AI x Midsized 2026 Report and LawNext's reporting on the BARBRI research converge on a single structural vulnerability: 63% of mid-sized law firms have formally adopted generative AI — most commonly Microsoft Copilot — while 81% of firm leaders simultaneously report internal concern about the technology's reliability and risk. A separate 8am Legal Industry Report found that 43% of firms still have no AI governance policy and no plans to create one, and 54% offer no AI training. The firms that solve the governance gap first — not by writing the most comprehensive policy, but by deploying the most operationally enforceable one — are the ones that will be able to accelerate AI deployment confidently while competitors remain in a holding pattern of concern.
