Clio's 2026 Legal Trends Report: Mid-Sized Firms Gaining Capacity Edge Without Headcount Growth

Clio's 2026 Legal Trends Report for Mid-Sized Law Firms found that 86% of mid-sized firms now use AI, and 65% can take on higher work volumes without expanding headcount — compared with just 43% of solo practices. Firms with formal AI governance policies reported better outcomes and scaling capacity, and 44% reported improved client satisfaction, more than double the rate seen at solo practices. The cloud infrastructure gap may blunt these gains: only 57% of mid-sized firms use cloud-based practice management platforms (versus 71–74% for solo and small firms), creating the fragmentation that prevents AI tools from operating across matters seamlessly. The underlying message for managing partners is that AI adoption without unified cloud infrastructure produces islands of efficiency rather than firm-wide operational leverage.
