Greenberg Traurig and Eckert Seamans breaches expose user-level risk

On September 10, Reuters reported that Greenberg Traurig and Eckert Seamans had disclosed incidents exposing sensitive information, including Social Security data. Greenberg Traurig said an unauthorized actor accessed a limited number of documents without compromising firm systems, while lawsuits concerning Eckert Seamans described a social-engineering attack on an attorney that exposed a limited number of files. The incidents show that AI and document-management permissions cannot compensate for weaknesses at the user, credential and exported-file layers. Mid-sized firms should test identity controls, download monitoring, incident response and data minimization together, rather than assessing each repository or AI tool in isolation.
