State Farm counsel is fined $999.99 over seven fabricated citations

On September 14, Reuters reported that Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Bradley ordered a State Farm lawyer to pay $999.99 after seven nonexistent case citations appeared in filings; the order was issued on September 11. The lawyer accepted responsibility, while State Farm said it expects outside counsel to verify the accuracy of court filings, including when AI is used. For mid-sized firms, the small monetary sanction understates the operational exposure: client confidence, malpractice risk and court credibility can be damaged by one unverified filing. Leaders should require authority checking at the proposition level, record who performed it and test whether the control still operates under deadline pressure.
