Federal judiciary maps more than 60 AI issues and 30 recommendations

On September 17, Reuters reported that a 24-member federal judiciary task force had identified more than 60 AI issues and made 30 recommendations covering security, governance, ethics training, probation, public-defense services and cost management. The judiciary expects additional recommendations within a year, while the Fifth, Sixth and Ninth Circuits are already using AI for tasks such as transcribing handwritten filings and checking briefs for procedural compliance. For mid-sized firms, the court system’s own use illustrates a workable boundary: AI handles administrative quality control while humans retain authority over legal decisions. Firms should use the same separation in internal workflows and anticipate that court-specific requirements will continue to diverge before national guidance settles.
