Cooley AI’s 14-Role Hiring Plan Raises the Engineering Bar
Inside Practice · SEPTEMBER 29, 2026 · 1 MIN READ
On September 24, Reuters reported that Cooley was hiring for 14 positions in Cooley AI, a firm-owned subsidiary intended to build internal tools and reshape client delivery, with a senior AI data engineer role advertised at $220,000 to $250,000. Reuters also reported that other large firms were recruiting AI specialists and that some director-level roles offered as much as $438,000. Mid-sized firms are unlikely to win a general engineering arms race on compensation, making a narrower portfolio of high-value workflows, shared services and vendor partnerships more realistic than duplicating a BigLaw lab. The second-order risk is talent dependency: firms should retain process maps, documentation and product ownership internally even when development is outsourced.
