England and Wales judiciary centralizes approval of judicial AI
Inside Practice · OCTOBER 13, 2026 · 1 MIN READ
On October 9, the judiciary of England and Wales issued a position statement limiting judicial AI use to approved tools and requiring every output to be reviewed, verified and approved by the judicial office holder. The statement specifies enterprise data protection, UK data residency and disabled web access, with oversight coordinated by a central steering group chaired by the Lead AI Judge. Mid-sized firms can use the same control pattern internally: maintain an approved-tool register, document data-location requirements and assign a single accountable governance forum. The second-order implication is that clients and courts may increasingly expect firms to demonstrate not merely a policy but a traceable approval and verification process for AI-assisted work.
