The AI-Native Law Firm Monthly
Issue 01 — January 2026
The monthly deep dive on AI-native law firms, AI-native legal tech vendors, funding, leadership and go-to-market.
Editor's Note
2026 opened with the industry doing arithmetic on the previous year. Legal tech raised $5.99 billion in 2025, including fourteen rounds of $100 million or more — a concentration of capital the sector has never seen (Artificial Lawyer, 6 Jan).
That made "is this a bubble?" the default question of January, and it landed squarely in the Thomson Reuters State of the US Legal Market 2026, which framed the AI boom as transformative but conditional on disciplined investment and transparency (Thomson Reuters Institute, 14 Jan).
The month's most under-covered story was a governance one: Mike Schmidtberger, who chaired Sidley Austin's executive committee for seven years, joined Norm Law as Chairman and Partner in January — a two-month-old AI-native firm backed by Bain Capital, Blackstone and Vanguard (Norm Ai timeline; Bloomberg Law).
Market Snapshot: AI-Native Law Firms
- Norm Law — launched November 2025 with an additional $50M Blackstone investment, positioned as a fully AI-native law firm for global institutional clients; Schmidtberger joined as Chairman in January and began recruiting partners (Norm Ai).
- Eudia enters 2026 as the most heavily capitalised entrant with $105M from General Catalyst, operating under Arizona's alternative business structure (Lupl).
- Crosby, Manifest and YC-backed General Legal round out the early cohort (Lupl).
- Crowell & Moring (700+ attorneys) moved from a late-2025 Legora pilot to a firmwide launch in January — the mainstream counterpoint (Inside Legal AI).
Vendor Watch
- The vendor and firm layers are diverging: Harvey and Legora sell into hourly-billing firms, while AI-native firms sell outcomes.
- Enterprise CLM continues consolidating around AI-native architecture, with Evisort (Workday) the reference example (Ironclad).
- 2026 predictions from practitioners centred on "platformisation" — AI plus private equity, MSOs and ALSPs creating integrated platforms smaller firms plug into (ADR.org podcast).
Funding & Investment
| Item | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 full year | ~$5.99B legal tech, 14 rounds $100M+ | Artificial Lawyer |
| Norm Law | +$50M from Blackstone (Nov 2025) | Norm Ai |
| Eudia | $105M, General Catalyst | Lupl |
Leadership & Big Hires
- Mike Schmidtberger (ex-Chairman, Sidley Austin) → Chairman & Partner, Norm Law (Norm Ai).
- Ilona Logvinova (ex-Cleary Gottlieb) → global chief AI officer, Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer (Reuters).
- Gretchen Greene (ex-Meta) → inaugural chief of AI strategy, Ropes & Gray (Reuters).
Mainstream Firms Going AI-Native
January's posture: hire a chief AI officer, roll out one enterprise platform firmwide, avoid pricing disruption. Firms will need new approaches to hiring, training and leadership focused on AI competence and change management (ADR.org).
