Deloitte's The AI Imperative: Reshaping of the Legal Industry (121 senior legal leaders, April–May 2026) found that 79% of legal departments increased AI budgets this year, with those that increased spending growing budgets an average of 67%. 78% cite cost reduction as the primary benefit they expect from outside counsel's AI use. Legal leaders expect AI to automate or save an average of 28% of legal work within two to three years, with outside spend expected to fall 20–40% as a result. The hourly billing share of matters is projected to fall from 72% today to 44% within two to three years. 85% believe AI will materially change law firm pricing. Only 4% say they have experienced any benefit from their outside counsel's use of AI. LinkedIn commentary (July 30) cited a Google CLO directive: a 30% cut in outside counsel prosecution fees. For law firm BD directors and managing partners: the 4% benefit realisation figure is the most commercially dangerous number in this week's data. GCs are increasing their own AI budgets by 67%, committing to 20–40% cuts in external legal spend, and directing fee reductions — while experiencing essentially no benefit from their firms' AI use. The firms that close that gap first, with visible, demonstrable AI-driven value delivery, will hold share as the reductions land.
