California creates AI-verifier and auditor frameworks

On September 9, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 813 and Assembly Bill 1405, according to the governor’s office, creating frameworks for independent AI verification organizations and a state registry with standards for AI auditors. The announcement describes SB 813 as enabling assessment of AI systems and models for compliance with state law, while AB 1405 addresses auditor independence, transparency and integrity. For law firms and legal departments, the laws make third-party assurance a more concrete part of California AI governance and should be reflected in vendor due diligence, audit-right clauses and evidence-retention practices. Implementation details will determine which assessments are available and how much reliance buyers can place on a registered auditor’s work, so teams should not treat registration alone as proof of system safety.
