U.S. legal employment reaches 1,245,900 as law-firm revenue grows

On September 10, Reuters reported that U.S. legal-sector employment reached a record 1,245,900 jobs in August, up 600 from July and 7.8% from five years earlier, while large firms had recorded double-digit first-half revenue growth. The continued hiring supports the view that demand and billing-rate increases are still carrying the market, but the comparison with an 11,000-job August decline in finance points to possible softness in an important client sector. Firms should therefore separate broad market momentum from practice-level demand when setting year-end hiring and expense plans. A record headcount is a cost commitment, not proof that productivity or collections are keeping pace.
