INEOS starts the EU’s first full-scale carbon-storage operation

On September 18, Reuters reported that INEOS said its Greensand project would begin operating as the EU’s first full-scale carbon-dioxide storage facility, injecting liquefied CO2 about 1,800 metres beneath the Danish North Sea. INEOS said the first phase can store as much as 400,000 tonnes annually and is designed to scale to between 4 million and 8 million tonnes, figures that have not yet been demonstrated through operating results. The launch moves carbon capture from project development into recurring questions about custody transfer, transport liability, monitoring, permanence and crediting. Counsel advising emitters and infrastructure providers should ensure that emissions claims match verified stored volumes and that contracts address leakage, interruption and long-tail responsibility across the capture-to-storage chain.
