EU waste rules could bar Indian metal-scrap imports from May 2027

On September 18, Reuters reported that a European Commission proposal would prevent India and other non-OECD countries from importing specified EU waste, including metal scrap, from May 2027 unless they obtain an exemption. Thirty-two non-OECD countries applied to remain eligible, and the Commission opened consultation through October 16 on whether their treatment systems meet environmentally sound standards. Exporters, recyclers and manufacturers should map affected waste streams and approved destinations now because a failed exemption could alter feedstock availability, freight routes and contractual performance. The planned biennial review of eligible countries also means supplier qualification will become an ongoing compliance process rather than a one-time jurisdiction check.
