LawSHIFT Defines "The Pre-Intake Problem" — Injured People Using AI Before Calling Attorneys; SEO Correlation to AI Visibility Is 0.076

LawSHIFT published its mini-book "The Pre-Intake Problem" (announced August 4) and defined a new category in the legal client acquisition market: Pre-Intake AI for PI. The company's research — drawn from tracking more than 1,500 personal injury firms across 256 US markets — found a near-zero correlation (0.076) between traditional SEO authority and AI visibility. Firms that ranked number one on Google can be invisible when an injured person asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Claude who to call. Of 1,551 firms tracked across 162 markets, only 4 scored above 1.0 on the AI for PI Index; the other 1,547 are effectively invisible in AI recommendation environments. The pre-intake window — the period between injury and first attorney contact — has historically been a "black hole" for law firms. LawSHIFT argues that AI has eliminated that invisibility barrier for injured people (they can now get settlement guidance, case valuations, and coverage analyses from AI before ever calling a firm) while simultaneously creating a new invisibility barrier for law firms (AI systems don't know their reputation, only their structured authority signals). For legal service innovators and firm marketing directors: the LawSHIFT research formalises a trend that has been accumulating since 2024. AI-generated recommendations are already shaping which law firms get retained for personal injury work; the signals that determine AI recommendation are entirely different from those that determine search ranking; and the firms that invest in AI authority infrastructure now are likely to benefit from compounding effects as LLM citations build over time — the same compounding dynamic that favoured early SEO investment.
