UK Government Launches AI Legal Assistants in Crown Court Pilot

The UK government announced on June 9 — with rollout continuing through August — that it is piloting AI legal assistants in the Crown Court, developed in partnership with top legal experts and leading AI developers, to support routine casework, research, and case analysis. The government also confirmed that every probation officer in England and Wales has been equipped with Justice Transcribe, an AI tool for recording and transcribing offender conversations. The pilots sit inside the UK's broader AI Growth Labs framework, giving legal tech companies controlled testing environments for court-ready products. The scale of the probation deployment — nationwide, operational, not piloted — is the more immediate signal: the UK government is already running AI-assisted criminal justice infrastructure at scale, well ahead of most comparable jurisdictions.
