UK Launches World's First Legal AI Regulatory Sandbox — Applications Close September 27

On August 3, 2026, the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) officially opened applications for the Advisory AI Growth Lab — the world's first sector-specific AI regulatory sandbox for legal services, with an application deadline of September 27, 2026. The sandbox is designed to accelerate the development and deployment of AI products and services by helping innovators navigate existing regulatory frameworks — including client confidentiality, data protection, and professional conduct rules — with coordinated access to three regulators: the Solicitors Regulation Authority, the Legal Services Board, and the Council for Licensed Conveyancers. The first cohort will support approximately 10 to 15 innovators. Critically, the DSIT framed the sandbox's access-to-justice objective explicitly: making legal services "faster, more affordable and easier for the public to access." For access-to-justice-focused legal tech founders, the AI Growth Lab represents a structured pathway to regulatory clarity that has not previously existed in any jurisdiction — a potential model for other governments and legal regulators to follow.
