RELX Completes Doctrine Acquisition — Sets Ambition to Serve One Million European Legal Professionals

RELX Group (owner of LexisNexis Legal & Professional) announced on September 3, 2026 the completion of its acquisition of Doctrine, the French legal AI platform recognized for its AI-powered case law analysis and legal research tools. Doctrine will join LexisNexis Continental Europe, Middle East and Africa (CEMEA). RELX had announced the acquisition agreement on April 28; the September 3 completion announcement set an explicit ambition "to serve one million legal professionals across Europe." The deal is strategically significant for multiple reasons: it gives LexisNexis a dominant AI-native legal research platform in the French and European markets where its traditional products have faced strong local competition; it accelerates LexisNexis's position in the European AI regulation environment ahead of EU AI Act compliance requirements; and it represents the second major acquisitive move by a legacy legal information provider (alongside Thomson Reuters) to buy AI capability rather than build it from scratch in competitive European markets.
