UK parliamentary committee calls for an enforceable AI regime

On September 14, The Guardian reported that Parliament’s Joint Committee on Human Rights called for a new UK AI law, an independent regulator, risk-tiered obligations, transparency requirements and prohibited uses. The committee said the existing AI Security Institute lacks power to compel developers to submit models for testing. For legal-tech companies, a statutory regime could replace today’s largely principles-based environment with evidence obligations that affect product classification, documentation, testing and sales cycles. The proposal is not yet law, so operators should monitor the government’s response and avoid treating the committee’s preferred structure as an enacted compliance timetable.
