OpenAI launches Astra for Law as a legal platform layer

On September 17, Reuters reported that OpenAI launched Astra for Law, combining GPT-6 Astra with an index of US case law, statutes and regulations and legal-specific instructions. OpenAI said selected firms including Sullivan & Cromwell, Ropes & Gray, Cooley, Latham & Watkins and Wachtell received initial access, while integrations include Relativity, Clio, Intapp and Thomson Reuters and legal-AI vendors such as Harvey and Legora can build on the platform. For operators, the move places model access, authoritative content and ecosystem distribution in one layer, increasing pressure on standalone products to differentiate through proprietary workflow, data or outcomes. Buyers and builders should watch how commercial terms, data boundaries and source coverage affect downstream vendors that may compete with OpenAI while depending on its infrastructure.
