NetDocuments connects governed legal knowledge to Microsoft Copilot through MCP

On September 30, 2026, NetDocuments announced an MCP-based connection that makes organizational legal knowledge available from Microsoft Copilot. The product direction places the document-management layer behind the AI interface lawyers may already use, reducing the need to move matter files manually into a separate assistant. For NetDocuments, that protects the DMS as the governed knowledge and permissions layer even when the user experience sits elsewhere. For other vendors, the implication is that interoperability now competes with proprietary interface lock-in, and the decisive implementation questions will be matter scoping, inherited access controls, auditability and revocation.
