BARBRI Acquires Lega — AI Fluency Becomes a Commercial Category

BARBRI, the legal education company best known for bar exam preparation, acquired Lega on or around June 22–23 — the AI startup that launched in 2023 focused on LLM governance but had evolved into experiential AI training for legal professionals. Lega's platform delivers hands-on AI workshops, simulations, hackathons, and labs for law firms and law schools, with prior deployments at AmLaw 100 firms and legal technology conferences. Founder Christian Lang joins BARBRI as Head of Innovation, overseeing AI skill development and readiness strategy; financial terms were not disclosed. The acquisition is BARBRI's second AI-adjacent deal in less than two years.

The commercial significance extends beyond the specific deal: BARBRI is betting that AI fluency — the practical ability to deploy, govern, and use AI tools competently — is now a billable training category distinct from standard CLE. The 54% of law firms reporting no AI training and the 43% with no AI policy (8am 2026 Legal Industry Report) represent the addressable market. For legal tech vendors, the combination signals that the training gap is becoming a standalone revenue category — one that could compete with, complement, or be bundled with AI tool deployments.
