The EU Digital Omnibus on AI is now law, and August 2, 2026 — 20 days away — is the date GPAI enforcement powers activate and Article 50 transparency obligations apply. For legal tech product teams, this is a product compliance event: any legal AI tool deployed in EU markets that uses a GPAI model (virtually all of them) must now disclose AI-generated content to users, implement machine-readable marking for synthetic outputs, and confirm that the provider has notified the EU AI Office under the GPAI framework. Non-compliance fines reach €15 million or 3% of global turnover. Legal tech companies building EU-facing products should have completed: (1) mapping which GPAI models are used in their stack; (2) confirming provider GPAI compliance status; (3) implementing Article 50 disclosure requirements in their UX; and (4) reviewing their EU-facing data processing under the converging GPAI + GDPR compliance architecture. EU AI Act Compliance Classifier tools published this week show that legal AI is classified as high-risk under several Annex III categories — employment, credit, and access to essential services — which carry the more demanding conformity assessment requirements coming in December 2027.
