ABA Well-Being Resources: Toolkit and Pledge Campaign Remain Active Infrastructure
BY INSIDE PRACTICE · AUGUST 19, 2026 · 1 MIN READ
The ABA Well-Being Pledge Campaign — launched in 2017 and updated through 2026 — continues to be the primary regulatory framework for lawyer wellbeing in the United States, with the ABA Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs (CoLAP) and the ABA Working Group to Advance Well-Being publishing a model template for responding to employees experiencing impairment from substance use disorder, mental health disorder, or cognitive impairment. The ABA's Well-Being Toolkit for Lawyers and Legal Employers provides practical guidance for legal employers launching organizational wellbeing initiatives, and the ABA's CLE mandate includes at least one hour of mental health or substance use disorder programming every three years under the Minimum CLE Requirements. For bar association wellness program leads and HR directors at law firms, the ABA infrastructure remains the baseline, but it was designed before AI-related job displacement anxiety, remote and hybrid work normalization, and the structural compression of junior pipelines became the defining wellbeing challenges. The guidance framework has not yet been updated to address AI-related psychological pressure specifically.
