NALP August 2026 Report: First Entry-Level Hiring Decline in a Decade — And Its Wellbeing Implications

NALP published its Class of 2025 Selected Findings on August 5, reporting the first decline in entry-level associate hiring at large firms since 2014: firms with 500 or more lawyers hired 7.5% fewer new associates, a reduction of approximately 540 positions. Separately, federal government legal hiring fell 37%, and public interest legal jobs declined 14% — the first year-on-year fall since 2016, driven by federal employment disruptions. NALP explicitly raises the "critical question" of whether this represents a temporary market correction or the beginning of a structural shift driven, at least in part, by generative AI.
