BARBRI Data: Billable Hour Pressure Is One of the Few Wellbeing Metrics Still Deteriorating

BARBRI's 2026 wellbeing survey reports that 65.5% of lawyers say billable hour pressure is negatively impacting their mental health — an increase of nearly four percentage points from 2024 and one of the few tracked metrics to worsen year-over-year rather than improve or plateau. The finding is significant because it runs counter to the narrative, promoted in some firm communications, that wellbeing initiatives launched in 2023–2025 are producing measurable gains. For firms that have invested in mental health programming without addressing billing structures, the BARBRI data offers an uncomfortable verdict: downstream interventions are not compensating for upstream pressure. Any firm strategy that does not address workload volume and billing expectation is likely to show similar deterioration in next year's numbers.
