ABA Survey: Women Lawyers Face Disproportionate Mental Health Burden

A new ABA survey finds that women lawyers report significantly higher rates of anxiety, financial stress, and depression than their male counterparts, with 36% experiencing a mental wellness issue in the prior twelve months. The study attributes elevated distress to billable hour requirements, workplace structures, gender bias, and work-life conflicts operating in combination rather than in isolation. Critically, the research reframes mental health in law not as an individual coping failure but as a structural design problem — the workplace produces the distress rather than selecting for individuals susceptible to it. For managing partners, the implication is that wellbeing investment targeting individual resilience will continue to underperform investment in work design and inclusion.
