ABA Repeals Law-School Diversity Standard Ahead of September 23 Accreditation Review

On September 8, Reuters reported that the American Bar Association’s legal-education council voted to eliminate the requirement that accredited law schools demonstrate a commitment to diversity in recruitment, admissions and programming. The rule had been suspended since February 2025, and a U.S. Department of Education committee is scheduled to consider the ABA’s federal accreditor status on September 23. For firms, the repeal creates more variation in how law schools define and evidence inclusive learning environments, shifting some responsibility for belonging, access and early-career support to employers and other pipeline partners. Recruiting teams should watch whether schools change programming or disclosures and should test their own selection, sponsorship and retention data rather than assume a common accreditation baseline.
