Google’s General Counsel Sets a Human-Judgment Boundary for AI-Era Training

On September 8, Axios reported Google General Counsel Halimah DeLaine Prado’s view that AI should complement rather than replace lawyers and cannot be the final decision-maker, even as Google’s legal team uses it for contracts, regulatory tracking, discovery and knowledge retrieval. The interview also surfaced a development concern: research, document review and drafting—the work through which junior lawyers traditionally learn—are among the tasks AI can absorb. Law firms should specify which foundational tasks remain developmental requirements, who reviews AI-assisted work and how supervisors will teach judgment when the first draft increasingly comes from software. Without that redesign, short-term capacity gains may weaken confidence, skill formation and the quality of the future supervisory pipeline.
