City trainee retention ranges from 67% to 93%

On September 9, LawCareers.Net reported autumn trainee-retention rates ranging from 67% to 93% across major UK firms, including Clifford Chance at 82% with 37 of 45 qualifiers retained, Baker McKenzie at 67% with eight of 12 and Burges Salmon at 93% with 25 of 27. Macfarlanes retained 24 of 29 qualifiers on permanent contracts, while Bird & Bird retained 16 of 19, including two fixed-term roles. For law firm leaders, retention percentages show available roles and business demand but do not establish whether early-career work is sustainable or whether those retained intend to stay. Firms should pair headline retention with allocation fairness, supervision quality, workload, unwanted attrition and one- and three-year stay rates to distinguish cohort absorption from a healthy talent system.
