US legal employment reaches 1,245,900

On September 10, Reuters reported that Bureau of Labor Statistics data released the previous week placed US legal-sector employment at a record 1,245,900 jobs in August, 600 above July and 7.8% higher than five years earlier. The measure includes lawyers, paralegals, judges and legal assistants and does not indicate job quality, hours or retention. For law firm leaders, aggregate growth alongside the ABA’s distress findings is a warning that headcount expansion does not by itself establish sustainable capacity. Workforce planning should compare demand and staffing with hours, recovery time, absence and turnover, because a growing sector can still concentrate overload in particular practices and career levels.
