February was the month "AI-native law firm" became a contested term.

On 1 February, a widely shared analysis argued that most so-called AI-native players are nothing of the sort: Legora and Harvey sit on top of legacy systems and legacy business models, while VC-funded outfits such as Eudia Counsel and Crosby have actually set up AI-augmented law firms (Sergio Maldonado, 1 Feb).

Then on 27 February, Zack Shapiro published The Claude-Native Law Firm, a detailed account of running a real practice around a general-purpose model rather than legal-specific software (Zack Shapiro, 27 Feb). It introduced a third category: firms that are AI-native with no legal tech vendor in the stack at all.

Market Snapshot: AI-Native Law Firms

Directories start appearing. A public directory of AI law firms surfaced on 5 February, assembled in minutes with consumer AI tooling — demand for a canonical list was outrunning supply (Vibecode.law, 5 Feb).
The no-vendor AI-native firm emerges as a real model: long-form prompting, markdown "skills" files as SOPs, treating the model as a mid-to-senior associate (Zack Shapiro).
Definitional test hardening: does AI change what the client buys and how it is priced, or only how the work gets done internally? (Maldonado)

Vendor Watch

Anthropic becomes a legal tech player by proxy as practitioners build directly on Claude (Zack Shapiro).
Lawhive raised a $60M Series B in February (~€50M), taking the AI-powered consumer law firm to $126M raised — the consumer-side analogue of the AI-native model (Lawyerd).
Fundraising trackers published 18 February confirmed platform concentration, with Harvey alone accounting for $660M across three rounds in the tracked period (NewMarketPitch, 18 Feb).
