Editor's Note

May was the month a foundation model lab, not a legal tech vendor, became the centre of gravity.

On 12 May Anthropic turned Claude into a legal workflow platform with connectors and plugins, and Thomson Reuters connected CoCounsel Legal directly into Claude workflows the same day (NewMarketPitch). Five days later, Anthropic's legal webinar drew roughly 20,000 registrants and 51 upvoted questions on privilege, hallucinations and deployment (Haqq.ai, 17 May).

Separately, Carta acquired Avantia on 13 May and launched an AI-native legal service for private markets — the category's first significant strategic acquisition (NewMarketPitch).

Market Snapshot: AI-Native Law Firms

  • The build path is now documented. The unit of work is a skill — a markdown file, typically 100–300 lines of plain English, encoding a workflow the team already runs weekly: NDA review, redlining, privilege logs, SOW playbooks (Haqq.ai).
  • Practitioner guardrails, not regulator guardrails: paragraph-level citation verification before anything ships; a written source for every legal proposition or flag it model-only; a running error log fed back into the skill as anti-patterns (Haqq.ai).
  • Category legitimacy: AI-native firms are gaining a foothold in the changing legal industry, with private financing flowing in at the same time technology changes what it means to practise law (Holland & Knight in the headlines, 7 May).

  • Anthropic shipped a legal go-to-market without calling itself legal tech (12 May) (NewMarketPitch).
  • Thomson Reuters × Claude integration for CoCounsel Legal (12 May) (NewMarketPitch).
  • Harvey added Mistral models on 26 May, giving European legal teams more model choice (NewMarketPitch).
  • Carta × Avantia — AI-native legal service for private markets (13 May) (NewMarketPitch).
  • Casepoint × Proofpoint linked eDiscovery with communications archives (11 May) (NewMarketPitch).
  • Cumulative positions as of 21 May: Harvey past $1B raised at $11B; Legora $866M across eight rounds at $5.6B (AI Funding Tracker).

Funding & Investment

A quieter month for new rounds after Q1. The strategic action moved to M&A and partnerships — Carta/Avantia, Harvey/Mistral, TR/Claude (NewMarketPitch).

Leadership & Big Hires

  • Executive search data published 4 May put chief AI officer adoption at 76% of organisations, with two distinct archetypes — technical build leaders and transformation leaders. Law firms have mostly hired the latter (Christian & Timbers).

Mainstream Firms Going AI-Native

The May pattern is bottom-up: individual lawyers at conventional firms building personal skill libraries that outperform internal tooling (Haqq.ai). Firms that do not capture and standardise that work lose it when the lawyer leaves — which is, in effect, how AI-native boutiques get founded.
